Calamine is a pink powder composed of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It is a mild antiseptic and astringent. Calamine, in lotion form, is a medication used to treat mild itchiness. It’s most well-known for treating the symptoms of poison ivy exposure but can also be used to alleviate the itchiness resulting from sunburn, insect bites and exposure to other poisonous plants such as poison oak and sumac.
